How does the mind of a DJ work?

I've been putting together sets of music for many years now, and I don't have an answer.

Maybe it's too simple (or trivial) a process to require explanation.

On occasion (like this particular show) I'm at a loss to pinpoint the origins of the connections that lead from one piece of music to the next.

The concern that I'm beyond any reasonable understanding whether that flow of connections makes ANY LICK of sense to anyone besides me may be another matter entirely.

Do you 'get' it? Do you care if you don't?

At first I felt a bit puzzled by the very definite mood that began to dominate the selections forming this show. Now I'll chalk it up to the changing season, the shift in the air. The quiet buzz behind a blissful drowse. Angled shafts of sepiatone afternoon sunlight poking through dark wooden shutters to catch sparkling dust motes drifting through a cozy peaceful room.
- - And stuff like that.

Can't you just play normal music - - ? Stick to one kind of thing I can recognize and just play that over and over? HELLO? Can't you just play the same safe music that I hear everywhere else? Some of these songs are kind of okay I guess, but a bunch them are way old or something. Like, by people who aren't even alive anymore. And not even American. That's weird. Why bother?
